NASA to Join Probe in Toyota Acceleration Incident

Washington, D.C., USA— NASA, together with the National Academy of Sciences will participate in the government’s investigation on the unexpected troubles of Toyota’s acceleration which resulted to a substantial recalls.

Electronics experts from NASA will assist National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study the possibilities of electronics failure in the Toyota incident. According to Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, NASA’s electronics know-how as well as computer and software hazards analysis will make sure a thorough examination.

Lahood further states, the National Academy of Sciences, an independent organization chartered by the Congress, will study unnecessary acceleration and electronic vehicle controls in another study.

The Academy study, which is expected to take 15 months, will evaluate acceleration problems and will propose to government safety measures on vehicle electronic control systems.

LaHood notes, "We believe their outside expertise, fresh eyes and fresh research perhaps can tell us if electronics have played a role in these accelerations."

Around 8 million vehicles worldwide have been recalled by Toyota including 6 million in the United States. In a statement, Toyota expressed “confidence in our vehicles and in our electronics” and will work together with the government investigation.
